The school operates a ‘real life branch’ of the Junior Newbury Building Society once a week – the branch is open one morning each week from 8:45 to 9:00a.m. usually in the school hall or library. During the academic year 2022-2023 the JNBS school branch will be open in school one morning each week on a Wednesday.

Our JNBS Cashiers are interviewed and selected early in the Autumn term. This year (2022-2023), our JNBS Cashiers are : Jake, Kourd, Lizzie, Niamh, Rana and Rupert.  

The Year 6 pupils are trained as ‘Cashiers’ by Newbury Building Society staff. This experience teaches them responsibility and teamwork, skills which they can take with them into their secondary schools.

To make the process as ‘life like’ as possible, in the summer term any interested year 5 pupils are asked to complete an application form to ‘apply’ for a cashier’s job; they are then given an interview by Miss Grand or Building Society personnel. Successful applicants are chosen and early in the Autumn term they attend a day’s training at the Basingstoke Branch of the Newbury Building Society where they learn how to treat their customers and how to run their branch. 

Junior Newbury Building Society allows children from the age of seven to save their pocket money and pay it in safely at the school.

If you would like your child to become a saver, an application form and account opening pack can be picked up from the school office, full instructions on how to open the account can be found in the pack. A parent or guardian will be required to visit a Branch of the Newbury Building Society in order to initially open an account for your child.  Once the official account is opened, your child can pay money into the account at school.  The account can be opened with a deposit of just £1.

Children can save anything from £1 to a maximum of £50 weekly. It is only possible to pay money into the child’s account at school, if money is to be withdrawn a visit to a Newbury Building Society branch is necessary.
