About Us
We are a lively, friendly school for children aged 4 to 11. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where every child is respected and empowered to reach their full potential. By championing personal integrity and maintaining high expectations for both work and behaviour, we encourage our pupils to become independent, confident learners who achieve their very best.
Every day, you will find something exciting happening to enhance our curriculum and enrich the learning experience for everyone. Whether it is competing in our annual conker competition, exploring ancient Greek artefacts, representing the school on the tag rugby team or building confidence through public speaking and performance, we ensure learning is always an adventure. At Sherborne St John C of E Primary School, there are many inspirational and unforgettable opportunities for each individual to grow in confidence and learn new life skills, which we believe will stay with them for life.
Our History and Heritage
Sherborne St John C of E Primary School has stood at the heart of our community for over 150 years. Established in 1850, the school was founded through the contribution of local Squire William Lyde Wiggett Chute of The Vyne. To this day, we maintain a proud and historic connection with The Vyne Estate.
The school’s early development was shaped significantly by the Rector of St Andrew’s Church, D.W. Chute, who provided dedicated oversight from the 1860s through to 1925. In its formative years, the school provided a vital education for local children until they entered the workforce at age 13 or 14. Following a period of transition, the appointment of Mr. G. Hammond in 1899 ushered in an era of stability and strong leadership that lasted nearly three decades.
His successor, Mr. R. Webber, led the school with distinction from 1927 until 1960. He is remembered with great fondness for his leadership during the Second World War, during which he successfully integrated evacuees from Southampton into our village school community.
Our Environment Today
Nestled in the scenic centre of the village, our school continues to flourish within its beautiful surroundings. We benefit from a rich network of local partnerships, including a close relationship with St Andrew’s Church and the National Trust’s The Vyne.
Our pupils enjoy a fantastic outdoor learning environment, featuring a dedicated fitness trail, a sheltered infant play area and peaceful garden spaces. These facilities, combined with our warm community spirit, provide an inspiring setting where children can thrive both academically and personally.
