We are a lively, friendly school for children aged from 4 to 11 (Reception to Year 6). Through different means we seek to promote ‘Growth Mindsets’ across the school encouraging children to reach their full potential through effort, persistence, trying different strategies and learning from their mistakes.

On a day-to-day basis you’ll discover there is always something fun going on to enhance our exciting curriculum, which strengthens the learning experience of all involved. This might be through competing in the annual conker competition, creating and exploring ancient Greek artefacts, playing with friends in the tag rugby team, learning to dance and sing like a dinosaur or finding new confidence in public speaking. At Sherborne St John C of E Primary School, there are many inspirational and unforgettable opportunities for each individual to grow in confidence and learn new life skills, which we believe will stay with them for life.

History of our school

Sherborne St John C of E Primary School has been in existence for over 150 years.  

Originally, The Local Squire, William Lyde Wiggett Chute who lived at The Vyne House contributed to building a school to provide education for the labouring and manufacturing classes of the village. The School opened in 1850 and has had close links with The Vyne Estate ever since.

The driving force behind the school from the 1860s until 1925 was the local Rector, D.W. Chute at St. Andrew’s Church. The School catered for pupils from the age of 4 until they left to go to work at 13 or 14 years old. There were many staff changes until 1899 when Mr G Hammond became Headteacher and introduced stability and leadership. He stayed until 1927 and was succeeded by Mr R Webber who is remembered with affection by past pupils. He saw the school through the Second World War, educating evacuees from Southampton alongside village children. Mr Webber retired in 1960.

Set in beautiful surroundings in the centre of the village, we benefit from the use of local facilities, a close relationship with St. Andrew’s Church, links with our local National Trust property The Vyne and a warm local community. The children enjoy making the most of our outside space with our fitness trail, infant sheltered play area, garden and covered quiet area.
